Megan Callow, associate teaching professor in the Department of English, has been named the inaugural Director of Writing for the University of Washington’s Seattle campus. Callow is an expert in the fields of Writing in the Disciplines (WID) and science writing, and since 2019 she has served as the Director of the Program for Writing Across Campus (formerly the Interdisciplinary Writing Program).
The appointment is supported by funding through the Provost’s Values-Based Initiative, creating the new position and associated responsibilities to enhance the culture of writing at UW Seattle.
Callow will facilitate coordination among the many stakeholders involved in writing instruction and writing support on the Seattle campus, and coordinate with stakeholders on all three UW campuses. This will include updating the “English Composition (C)” and “Writing (W)” general education requirements, forming a UWS Writing Council, and supporting effective writing pedagogy. She, in consultation with the Writing Council, will also conduct research to determine programming needs and initiate workshops to improve writing pedagogy, especially related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access.
More information is available at the recently-launched “Writing@UW” website, which will become the go-to portal and resource for all things related to writing and writing instruction on the Seattle campus.
